South Korean Government Regulates Online Casinos

Asian online casinos have become extremely popular over the past ten years. The most popular areas for online casino generation have been Macau and Singapore, but now another country has entered this fast growing industry. South Korea has decided that it also wants in on the online casino action and they have released reports that they are opening three new casinos. Singapore and Macau have been notorious for their great international relations and the joining of South Korea is a step towards even better Asian relations.

The Asian gaming industry has shown that there are many South Korean players and establishing a Korean casino online seems like the smart thing to do. There is also an issue for South Korean players that their currency is not expected in the online gaming sites. By establishing its own online casino, they will be able to use their own currency and to follow its own national regulations.

The South Korean casinos are a bit different in that they will be government owned. Instead of individuals owning the business and making a fortune, all revenue will go to the South Korean government.

The government involvement is seen as a positive step in South Korea as it will have more motivation to forbid underage gambling and be more careful in its awareness of gambling addiction. Although big investors were interested in joining this investment, they realized that their competition (the South Korean government) was just too big.

The biggest issue with the government owning the casinos is that there is talk that it will not be as modern and innovative as some private individuals are able to make it. There may be a more modest approach to promoting the gaming and it is expected not to reach the revenue that Macau and Singapore do.

This plan, which will be in effect in later 2006, also has South Korean citizens curious as to what the results will be. The government involvement and the restrictions on certain aspects of the gaming are seen to be not positive in terms of revenue in this new venture.
